How can we develop sustainably highly urbanised, post-industrial landscapes in the 21st century? A key theme of Urbanscapes 2026 is finding a balance between conservation and development—unlocking new opportunities for spatial transformation and fostering long-term, sustainable growth with tangible benefits for the local environment, communities, municipalities, developers, and investors alike.
How can we develop highly urbanised, post-industrial landscapes in the 21st century in a sustainable manner? A key theme of Urbanscapes 2026 is finding a balance between conservation and development, unlocking new opportunities for spatial transformation and fostering long-term, sustainable growth with tangible benefits for the local environment, communities, municipalities, developers, and investors alike.
How can we work with the identity and cultural richness of areas undergoing significant socio-economic and associated environmental change? How can strategies, planning, design, and landscape stewardship help strengthen their resilience, prosperity, and natural qualities – while supporting an appropriate quality of life for their inhabitants? How can these efforts contribute to economic development?
These are the central questions addressed by Urbanscapes 2026 Ostrava, an international conference organised by the Czech Association for Landscape Architecture.
The conference will focus on the regeneration and development of landscape diversity – from environmental, social and cultural perspectives. It will highlight the transformative potential of landscape architecture and architecture as fundamental tools in shaping and managing both urban and rural environments. Through inspiring case studies and appropriately innovative approaches, it will demonstrate how considered design can enhance ecological stability, social cohesion, and appeal for investors, developers, and other stakeholders.
Themes of urban and landscape planning, the restoration of close-to-nature ecosystems, and economic development will be explored through the lens of liveability and the strengthening of local identity – across both degraded and everyday landscapes.
Experts from a range of disciplines will present their visions, strategies, and methods – from systemic solutions and participatory projects to artistic and experimental interventions. The conference will showcase best practices from the Czech Republic and abroad.
