Challenges associated with the transformation of industrial cities: What does the industrial city of the future look like, where people can live well? What driving forces need to be harnessed to change the industrial urban landscape? What are the benefits of landscaping solutions with an integrated and holistic approach to the urban landscape?
Almost every city harbours abandoned, wasted and degraded areas – brownfield sites. They are often burdened with the negative impacts of historic industrial development, but, at the same time offer a great opportunity for regeneration of the city. Brownfield sites are often large areas close to or within the centre of a city which makes them targets of rapid construction projects based on hasty solutions
lacking a well considered conceptual basis. The Czech Association of Landscape Architects have organized this conference, URBANSCAPES 2019, to point to the urgent need for adopting a conceptual approach to the transformation of brownfield sites. We believe that well integrated and inspiring urban landscapes is a joint task for experts from many disciplines, and that sustainable, healthy, resilient and attractive cities can only be achieved by taking up this multidisciplinary challenge. This belief is reflected in the diversity of conference speakers. As landscape architects, we promote the concept of the multi-layered development of a modern city and this is the main topic of URBANSCAPES 2019. Almost forty speakers will present novel ideas and share their experience. We trust that they will inspire your future work.
